What is a Power Conditioning Unit?
A Power Conditioning Unit (PCU) essentially fine-tunes an electrical system from the inductive equipment (motors) back through the utility company’s electric meter. This fine-tuning slows down the operation of the meter and reduces the amount of power drawn from the utility, reduces harmonic distortion within the power supply, and saves you money on electricity consumption and expenses.
How Does It Work?
The PCU stores reactive power in capacitors. As the motor operates, reactive power is “pulled” and “pushed” to and from the power conditioning unit by the motor at 60 cycles/second. The PCU stores and releases the energy needed to function more efficiently. This approach reduces the heat generated on the lines and, therefore, increase their life expectancy. Electricity that is normally pushed back through the power distribution system is now reclaimed and recycled by the PCU. The PCU reclaims, stores, recycles and supplies power to all inductive loads (motors). You already paid for this electricity. Why waste it?
Benefits of our PCU:
- Reduced utility bills
- Improved voltage conditions
- Elongate the life of your motorized equipment
- Reduced transmission losses
- Reduced carbon footprint
Saving on electrical expenses depends on many factors i.e. the amount and size of inductive motors, the rate at which you are charged per kilowatt-hour for electricity, how old the equipment is, and how far away you are from the load (power company transformers and generation stations). However, generally speaking, users of our PCU’s have seen 10-25% in savings. A typical example for a small commercial system; customers with on average electric bill of $1000/month can save $30,000 to $60,000 over the next 25 years. The typical payback period for an investment in your power factor correction system is between 6 and 36 months. The life expectancy of our PCU is over 10 years, allowing you to save a significant amount of money over time.
